Online Reputation- Jesse D. Dredge

Memo

To: Jesse David Dredge

From: Cedric Reeves

CC: Preston Parker

Date: 4/19/10

Re: Online Reputation

While performing an online reputation check I was able to found out personal information about your life in seconds. Although I did add you as a friend on Facebook, the majority of the information that I found out about you came from a basic Google search.

The first observation that I found when I searched ‘Jesse Dredge’ was a website called Pocatello Vows. On Pocatello Vows I found out what your middle name is, the exact date that you were married, your wife’s middle name, where you and your wife grew-up, that you served for the national guard in Utah, and even where you served your mission at.

Another observation that I found out while performing the online reputation check is the projects that you participate in a non-profit organization called 9-1-1 Guatemala from a twitter account. 911 Guatemala is, A non-profit organization dedicated to the cause of acquiring ambulances and medical supplies for donation to under-supplied rural Guatemalan areas.” I am assuming that you are apart of this non-profit because you served a LDS mission in Guatemala.

Although I did find personal information about you, none of the information was harmful. I found zero provocative photos on your Facebook, and zero articles online that were damaging to you. I would suggest that you remove your name from Pocatello Vows, because someone who might try to steal you identity would have a lot of information on you.

Final: Position Paper

Burger Planet has been in the quick service food industry since 1934 with considerable success. However, recently there has been a decline in the number of 40-50 year old women buying food at Burger Planet. This is an extremely valuable demographic, because not only do women eat at Burger Planet, but they also bring their husbands and children to eat at Burger Planet. The reduction of 40-50 year old women that eat at Burger Planet is attributed to all fast-food companies being attacked by the media, and women becoming more educated on the dangers of eating unhealthily.

There are hundreds of websites, movies, magazine, and newspaper articles created annually to showcase how unhealthy quick service food can be, many of them stating that quick-service food is “unhealthy and dangerous.” Because of this, many customers are choosing not to eat at quick- service restaurants, thinking that it is something that will cause them to be unhealthy. The Popular documentary “Supersize Me” had detrimental effects not only on McDonalds, but also on every quick-service food company; forcing many of these companies to adapt.

There are enormous amounts of media showing that quick- service food is unhealthy for the consumer. This has lead to a drop in the amount of sales to the 40-50 year old women demographic at quick-service restaurants. Burger Planet needs to change its menu and strategies to make itself more appealing to the 40-50 year old demographic. Burger Planet can improve its image by adding healthy menu items, getting a celebrity spokesperson such as Jane Petersen, revamping Corny the Clowns image, and changing its marketing strategy to appeal to middle aged women.

A healthy menu can be a excellent jump start to attracting 40-50 year old women to Burger Planet. Healthy choices such as fresh fruit, salads, and fat free chicken sandwiches can attract demographics that are more health conscious, and would not regularly eat at a quick-service restaurant. By adding these healthy food options, 40-50 year old women are much more likely to eat at Burger Planet, as well as bring in family and friends to eat.

A celebrity spokesperson can work wonders for a quick-service restaurant. By hiring fitness guru Jane Petersen, Burger Planet can revamp its image. Jane Petersen is known nationally by 40-50 year old women because of her success in helping talk show host Opal Whitcomb lose weight, and become healthier. Petersen is a name that many women will recognize, and is someone who these women will trust for health advice. By having Petersen help with the promotion of the new healthy items on Burger Planets menu it is possible to attract more 40-50 year old women.

Corny the Clown has been taken out of Burger Planet’s marketing strategy for several years now, because quick-service restaurants have been accused of unfairly marketing to children with mascots. Adding new healthy menu items is the perfect opportunity to revamp Corny’s image. By teaming Corny up with Petersen, his name will be turned into something new, and we can use Corny the Clown once again. This will help attract children to Burger Planet, without having negative consequences for using a mascot.

While 40-50 year old women are eating at quick-service restaurants less often because of negative media and increased health awareness. It is possible to attract that demographic again. By implementing new, healthy menu items, hiring a celebrity spokesperson such as Jane Petersen, revamping Corny the Clowns image, and having a great marketing strategy, it is possible to change Burger Planets image and attract 40-50 year old women once again.

Resume Readings

This week articles was a good read. The first article Six steps to Resume 2.0 helped me get a better understanding on how to create a resume. With the advancement of social media it is important that you understand how to create an effective resume. I enjoyed the steps that the article included on how to create a resume.

I also enjoyed the Common Mistakes article. The article helps you avoid little mistakes that are made when creating a resume. Often little mistakes are made when creating a resume; those mistakes can prevent a possible employer from reading your resume. It is important in today’s job market to give yourself the leg-up.

Assignment 1

Ethics is important, when having conversations on the internet. Netiquette is the ethics that you use when you’re using the internet. I had no idea what ethics you are suppose to use when you surf the web, or send emails. The basics of Netiquette is don’t do anything, or say anything on the internet that you wouldn’t say to someone’s face.
I also enjoyed the cartoon. It is basically saying that anybody can say what they want on the internet, and anybody can be who they want to be.
The e-mail etiquette was a good read. It explained to you what was acceptable to say in an email. Grammar and spelling is important when you are writing an e-mail to anyone. It also explained common errors that are made when sending e-mails.

Power of Social Media

Dave Carroll, the lead singer of the up-and-coming band called, Sons of Maxwell, booked a flight from Canada to Nebraska by way of Chicago through United Airlines. Carroll and his band landed in Chicago waiting for their connecting flight, where one of the members of Sons of Maxwell witnessed his bass guitar being tossed around, and Carroll’s 3,500 dollar Taylor guitar was tossed before that.
According to Carroll he politely asked the flight attendant, why his guitar being tossed around? The attendant had no answer for Carroll, and rudely cut him off and told him to talk to the lead agent outside. After finding the lead agent outside she refused to talk to him, and disappeared into the crowd. Carroll finally ran into a worker at the gate that was willing to help him. Carroll explained to the worker that the baggage handlers were throwing around expensive gear. The response that the gate worker gave him was not was he was looking for, she said, “But hun, that’s why we make you sign the waiver”, Carroll responded by saying he didn’t sign a waiver, and no matter what, nobody deserves to have their things treated like that. She then told him to talk to the ground crew; once again Carroll was getting the run-around.
After Carroll arrived at his destination, he opened his guitar case and realized that his guitar was broken. After a series of calls to United, he was told that he would not be compensated for his loss.
Nine months later he finally realized that he was fighting a battle he couldn’t win. So he told one of the United representatives that he was part of a band, and he would be posting a series of music videos on YouTube about his experiences with United.
I believe Carroll posted the United Break Guitars videos because he wanted to let the world know how United treats their customers. Carroll was smart enough to realize the power of social media.
You can say that Carroll believed that his videos would get a lot of hits on YouTube; but there is not a model around that shows how successful posting his videos would be.
As of today there have been over 7 million views of United Breaks Guitars. Costing United millions of dollars, and even worse damaging United’s brand. Carroll has repeatedly thanked United for not compensating his loss, because he has made way more money on United Breaks Guitars, than United would have paid him for his guitar.
When United decide not to follow the “Golden Rule” in PR, which is treat people how you want to be treated; they damaged their credibility. As soon as Carroll told United that he was going to post a series of videos; someone in PR should have stepped in, and paid Carroll. Instead the company failed to realize the power of social media, and they now have a PR nightmare.
Social media damaged United’s image and credibility, I’m not sure if any PR organization can help them. I do believe United will recover, and won’t continue to lose millions, but I think it’s too late for them to salvage their image. I know for a fact, after watching United Breaks Guitars, every time I fly United I will be thinking about Dave Carroll’s song.
